Welcome Fall

Maybe it's the slight chill to the mornings or that the trees have just started to turn, but it seems like fall is here.  And nothing welcomes autumn as much as picking apples and enjoying the beautiful trees.  So Nathan and I made the trip out to Styer Orchards to pick some apples. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they still had peaches this late.  Nathan and I loved wandering through the orchards and picking our peaches and apples.  Nathan even helped pick a few of each.

The orchards made me a little homesick.  I grew up with 8 fruit trees in my yard that our family would harvest and spend the fall canning together.  I continued the tradition by canning some of our goodies into homemade applesauce and canned peaches.

Our trip to the orchards did make me very excited for fall.  There are spectacular colors on the trees to enjoy, pumpkins to pick, and one little boy to play in the leaves with.  It's going to be a great autumn.

Not So Green Thumb

I've successfully got my orchid plant to re-bloom.  I have two orchid flowers and a few leaves growing from the stem.  I should feel proud, but my orchids are upside down.  I have no idea what happened.  I watered it properly, fertilized it, gave it the right amount of sunlight, and even regulated its night and daytime temperatures to help it to bloom.  I gave so much time to caring for it.  But the flowers grew in upside down.  I thought flowers knew how to grow right side up all by themselves.  Any thoughts on how to make my flowers grow the way they are supposed to?

Green Thumb

Brad gave me an Easter lily plant last year. But the poor thing hasn't been doing so great recently. I think I may have overwatered it (but the pot doesn't have a drainage hole either so it's not entirely my fault.) We also needed a real pot for the orchid Brad gave to me for Valentine's Day. So, we took a little trip to Home Depot. While there, we decided to get a basil plant and a strawberry plant. I'm excited to have fresh basil to cook with and the strawberry plant has lots of flowers on it so I'm hopping that I'll at least get a few strawberries. We'll see whether or not I've got a green thumb after all.
